LATINO MOVIE OF THE MONTH - FULL MOVIE 9/2013

This month's Latino movie is The Mambo Kings.

Cuban brothers arrive in America with a suitcase full of songs, hearts filled with passion and a desire to make it big in the promised land. One is a bit more passionate than the other, who likes the simple life a little more and continues to miss the girl who stayed back home, not realizing that his brother was forced to leave with him in order to save his life.

An utterly charming film. Highly recommended.  The ending was just a little off, but overall this movie was very entertaining.

Joell Ortiz responds to Kendrick Lamar's verse

Kendrick Lamar wanted to raise the bar when he only named ten rappers and claimed to be the King of New York. And within 24 hours, rappers like Fabolous, Joe Budden, Meek Mill and Tyga replied via the internet and twitted away. No response has been made by Wale, J-Cole or Drake thus far. And Asap Rocky is also M.I.A.

But according to the response to Big Sean "Control" ft. Kendrick Lamar & Jay Electronica,  Joel Ortiz is the first rapper to state on track to Lamar “Lil homie you ain’t the King Of New York/You the next thing on my fork".

So even though he was not mentioned on Kendrick's verse, Joell Ortiz felt some kind of way. It's only Hip Hop and Joell is the perfect lead off battle rapper to step to the plate and rep New York.

In addition to murdering the track, Ortiz even expresses his time spent at Aftermath Entertaiment, a label Kendrick is signed to when he raps,  I’ll leave the King of L.A. to Dre, I was this close to staying Aftermath but lamped out like a genie/Dre you a fuckin gangsta and [Kerniss] you such a sweetie and guess what I’m a free agent again if y’all ever need me.”

It's been reported that the record will not be featured on Big Sean's Hall Of Fame due to sample issues, which means you can expect to hear much more of the track and other verses to go along with it on mix tapes CD's.

Kendrick's verse did exactly what it should..bring the real MC's out. And Latino rappers never want to be left out of a street fight.

PBS DOCUMENTARY ON THE 500-YEAR HISTORY OF LATINOS IN AMERICA

By LYNN ELBER, AP Television Writer

An ambitious PBS documentary on the 500-year history of Latinos in America is aimed at a broad audience, its producer said Wednesday.

"These stories are not that distant from anyone. I think in some ways we share similar experiences no matter where we come from," and whether people are immigrants or not, "American Latinos" producer Adriana Bosch told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

Featuring familiar faces such as Oscar-winning actress Rita Moreno and journalist Ray Suarez was part of enhancing the film's appeal, Bosch said. Actor Benjamin Bratt is the narrator.

The three-part, six-hour documentary debuting in September includes interviews with Dolores Huerta, co-founder of a group that was the forerunner to the United Farm Workers of America; writer and commentator and Linda Chavez; and musician Gloria Estefan.
Bratt, whose mother emigrated from Peru as a teenager, said Latinos have not historically been seen as part of the American story.

"American history always is from a Eurocentric point of view, and the real American history is so much richer than that," Bratt said during a panel discussion. "Even in 2013, we are still seen as the mysterious, exotic 'other,' even though we are as American as anyone else."

Asked about the rarity of Hispanics on U.S. television despite Latino population growth and the "browning" of America, Suarez said commerce is part of the solution.

Businesses want to reach consumers without regard to ethnicity or language, he said, suggesting it's a trend Americans in general should get used to."I can't tell you how many times I've heard, 'I hate hearing press 2 for Spanish,'" Suarez said. "Why do you hate that? ... If you don't want to speak Spanish, don't press 2."

"Latinos" includes the 16th century arrival of the Spanish to America; the wave of Latino immigration to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries; Latinos during World War II; the 1960s start of social action movements, and the contemporary debate over illegal immigration.

PBS is billing the documentary as TV's first comprehensive look at Latino American history. In 2007, Hispanic organizations criticized PBS and filmmaker Ken Burns for inadequately representing the contributions of Latinos in his 15-hour documentary on World War II.

RUBEN BLADES performs in Lincoln Center NYC 8-7-2013

It was a free NYC concert which attracted thousands of Rubén Blades fans from all parts of the world. They came out to enjoy a night of salsa music and dancing.  And for Blades performing his hits hasn't slowed down at all. He is in full swing to securing a music career as an iconic salsa performer. Well, in actuality, for many salsa music enthusiasts or critics, Rubén Blades has reach iconic salsa status many years ago. Not to mention, he also accomplished a successful acting career and as an influential activist for the urban Latino community.

Many fans have enjoyed plenty of Rubén Blades' performances in New York City but unfortunately many was left out in the streets from this particular concert at the Damrosch Park Bandshell in Lincoln Center, NYC. It could have been their worst concert experience, however it was a experience that was entertaining and enjoyable. Why was it enjoyable? Because the show was part of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival and its was an outdoor festival open for the public to listen and watch.

Not everyone had a good seat. Some of the crowd audience watched the performances from the city streets through a protect screen that was used to make it look something  similar to a closed venue. It didn't matter because the sound of the music was vibrant for everyone to hear and dance the night away.

Overall, the entire scene was exuberant. Rubén Blades delivered several of his classic songs while providing the audience with a little brief  history of his musical journey for them to take home and remember.
